MU123 (Discovering Mathematics)

Tutor Marked Assignment (TMA)-summer semester 2014/15

This TMA is based on Units 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 11, MU123 Discovering Mathematics. It is marked out of 100 and is worth 20% of the overall assessment component. This TMA requires the students to apply course concepts that deal with working with numbers, percentages, ratios, statistical concepts and pictures.

The TMA is intended to:

- Apply how to use the basic math skills, percentages, ratios, growth rates and statistical measurements and interpret the results.

- Apply how to use graphs and charts in Microsoft Excel in displaying information.

- Educate the student on how to construct the business formulas and the use of math in business. i.e. Trade and cash discounts.

INSCTRUCTIONS:

• Cut-off date: Submit this assignment no later than (July 26th 2015). No late submissions will be allowed after this date.

• Word count: you should comment on the results in no more or less than the number of words mentioned in question (plus or minus 10%).

• Plagiarism: Remember that you should submit your own work. Plagiarism will lead to a significant loss of marks. Extensive plagiarism could mean that you failed your TMA. (Refer to AOU definitions of cheating and plagiarism at the end of this document- see PT3 Form)

• Microsoft word: your TMA should be written in Microsoft Word file. Only one single word file will be submitted. Regarding the Excel tables and charts, you need to copy them to your main TMA file (copy and paste).

• Using PT3 form: When you have completed your TMA, you must fill in the assignment form (PT3) attached at the end of this document, taking care to fill all information correctly.

• Refer to your tutor and local BCC if you have any concern regarding the TMA.

The TMA:

This TMA consists of 6 questions that cover the material up to the end of unit 5. Answer the following 6 questions showing your full work, formulas and calculations:

Question 1 (21 marks; one for each point): short answer questions based on units 1&2&3: (show your full work)

a) Find the LCM of

1. 5 and 25

2. 3, 5 and 15

3. 3, 5, 15 and 25

b) Find the HCF of the following:

1. 20 and 24

2. 12 and 24

3. 7, 14, 21 and 35

c) Use prime factorizations to find the LCM and the HCF of the following two sets of numbers

1. 18 and 30

2. 9, 18 and 30

d) Calculate the following

e) Do the followings:

1. Express the numbers 6452 and 0.0056 in scientific notation.

5. Write each of the following numbers as a product of prime factors 24, 3600

f) Convert the following numbers from scientific notation to ordinary notation:

2. 6.035 x 10 -5

Question 2 (25 marks; 5 for each problem): Solve the following problems based on concepts of percentages and Cash and Trade Discounts:

(Show your work and formulas):

1. If you get a monthly salary of SR6800, and you were given 2.5% increase. How much would be your new salary.

2. If the current oil price is $114 a barrel and expected to rise to $130 in one year. What would be the percentage increase in the oil price?

3. You paid SR94600 for your car last year. You need to trade it in for a new model this year. The dealer discounts 15% of the last year price for depreciation. What would be the trade value for your car?

4. Find the trade discount for a mobile that retails at SR1400 and has a trade discount rate of 35%.What is the net price (NP)?

5. Find the net price of an order with a list price of SR8000 and a trade discount series of 20/10/5.

Question 3: (12 marks; 3 for each point): solve below question based on unit 2:

A health club charges SR50 as a rate each time for using its facilities. Furthermore it gives a fixed discount of SR20 for every customer. If total cost is T, and the number of visits given by n times, then find

1. A formula for total costs of using health club services.

2. using the cost formula, calculate the total cost of 15 visits to the health club.

3. If the health club decides to stop giving the one-time SR20 discount, and instead starts giving SR2 discount each visit. Then what would be the formula for calculating the total costs of n visits to the club.

4. How do you compare the total costs of 15 visits under the new pricing policy to the old one?

Question 4 (12 marks; 3 each): This question is based on unit 6:

1. Calculate the slope of the line, which passes through (5,1) and (-1,7)

2. Find the equation of the line described in part 1.

3. Find the x-intercept and y-intercept of the line described in part 1.

4. Draw the graph in part 2.

Question 5 (10 marks; 5 each): You are able to answer questions 5 after studying book D Unit 11.

Based on below table which represents the family annual expenditures for random country, answer the following questions

1. Use Microsoft Excel in drawing a circle graph (pie chart) to represent the following expenditures of a family with an annual income of $49,800.

2. Explain your results in 50-60 words.

Question 6 (15 marks): You are able to answer this question based on unit4.

2. ( 5 marks) Find the standard deviation for both sections.

3. (6 marks) Compare between the two sections regarding the location (centralization) and the spread (variation) of the grades.
